Home Contents Insurance – Getting it Right

By Brad On November 6, 2009 Under Home

You don’t have to have home contents insurance – it isn’t mandatory – but you can lose such a lot if you don’t have it. About one in six people have no policy in place. There are a large number of people that think that home insurance is not necessary because of the small risk – but there is no surety here.

If you do not have any home contents insurance, it is time to start thinking about taking out a policy. How much is in your home that is of value. Then consider whether you will be able to afford to replace them if the inevitable happened. Larger items such as TVs, computers, ovens can all be affected by incidents. But what about clothing, baby equipment, bedding, small items of jewellery, cooking utensils and of course the British favourite, the kettle? Adding together all of your items can accumulate into a large amount of money!

There is a perception among many people that home contents insurance is quite expensive. In fact, many insurers can give you a fantastic competitive quote. Lower prices will be on offer from the many companies who are looking to secure your business. With so many insurance companies to choose from, you can afford to be picky. The competition to get policyholders is actually quite fierce and so you are in a great position to negotiate the price of your policy.

You will find that the amount you will pay for home contents insurance is not that much in the grand scheme of things. For as little as £6 per month, you can have the protection and peace of mind that all of your personal belongings are covered. Cheaper premiums can apply if you pay more in terms of the policy excess. No Claims Bonus discounts can be put in place if you never claim on your policy, which means premiums reduce.

It is time to get out of the “it won’t happen to me” mentality and put the measurements in place to ensure all of your home contents are covered. Unless you are really really rich, replacing all of your household items could well be costly!
