Look For Less In Marketing Home
If you’re getting ready to put your home on the market, the first thing you might want to do is cut back, on decorating that is.
We have all seen the clutter collecting people on television shows, this may be extreme but even the average home gathers up and collects lots of things over the years.
The clutter we live in each day is overlooked. It may be a pile of newspapers on the bench, children’s artwork stuck to the fridge or the mail piling up on the coffee table. Cleaning house and de-cluttering are not the same thing and may both solve these problems. From the position of someone outside your family even family portraits adorning a wall can seem like clutter.
By de-cluttering potential buyers can visualize their belongings on the wall and their ornaments on the shelves instead of yours. While most of us take along our own clutter when we move, we don’t imagine that we’ll pile our newspapers where you have the magazines, while we do easily picture our couch replacing yours.
To get an idea of what un-cluttered space looks like just pick up an interior design magazine and take a look at it. Another way to get an idea is to tour furniture stores where they have mock rooms set up. Everything is impersonal with no pictures of family members and everything is in it’s place to make the area feel new.
The hardest part, however, is getting your home from the place where you live to a place that another person can envision as their new home.
Doing that will require a careful evaluation of your living space from the foyer to the bath.
Take one room at a time and begin packing. When your home sells, you’ll have to pack all your belongings any way, so begin boxing up the things you don’t need. Just putting away those things will begin the process of de-cluttering your rooms as knick-knacks, souvenirs and family portraits are put away. This will have the dual benefit of not only making your space less cluttered and easier to clean when you need to prepare for a prospective buyer.
Start to box up your collections once you have already packed away what you do not need. It’s easy to crowd too many books or movies on a shelf and while they’re not in your way, they do add clutter. Make your closet space bigger by putting away clothes that you never wear and boxing them up.
